Interview with Gerwin van der Kruis, CEO of, our current Spotlight Reseller

CEO of newest Lycoris Reseller speaks on joining the Desktop Revolution

MAPLE VALLEY, WA - February 19, 2004 - Lycoris presents an interview with Gerwin van der Kruis, CEO of Circletec is Lycoris' current spotlight reseller, located in the Netherlands.

What does Circletec offer clients, including your target markets?

Circletec is a web-based store that aims to bring freedom of choice and honesty to its clients.

In the European market it is normal to use “marketing” specifications for products, instead of the real thing. An example is the way digital cameras and speakers are presented in stores and advertisements. We often find advertisements offering 5 mega-pixel digital cameras for just 140 Euros, or 1000 watt 5.1 home theatre speaker packages for 100 Euros. In reality the 5 mega-pixel camera has a 2.1 mega-pixel CCD chip interpolated to 5 mega-pixels, and the home theatre speakers have maybe 30 watts RMS in total. These kinds of things inevitably lead to disappointments.

We have a policy of “what you see is what you get”. We don’t use marketing specifications like interpolated resolutions and maximum power output, or specifications that are only applicable when there is an ideal situation.

We base our range on certainty and honesty.

Our product categories include:

  • Sound (speakers, MP3 players)
  • Storage (USB drives, USB hard drive enclosures, card readers)
  • Laptops (with Desktop/LX preinstalled)
  • Imaging (Web cams, Scanners, Digital cameras)
  • Wireless (WLAN, Bluetooth)
  • Computer peripherals
  • Personal computers (with Desktop/LX preinstalled)

Our main target market is Europe. We stand for an open and honest market, and the products we sell are suitable for everyone, both new and experienced users.

Why did you choose to provide Lycoris software to your customers?

We want to offer our clients freedom - the freedom of choice. Lycoris is not like other companies in the Linux space. It has focused on both the experienced and the inexperienced user, and welcomes everybody who wants to be part of the global Linux community.

Red Hat is focused more on corporate Linux, and SUSE doesn’t offer any decent support for the end user. We first selected Lindows and Lycoris, but Lindows is embroiled in an ongoing legal fight about its name and we wanted certainty. We don't want to depend on Mr Robertson’s will to continue his legal contest. We want to stick with a company that doesn't need to hide its name for any reason, but can stand on its own two feet, proudly, anywhere in the world. We also prefer the greater stability of Desktop/LX and Lycoris software. Also, Lycoris has a reputation for truth in its information to the public, which I cannot say of Lindows.

What factors influenced your decision?

  • Diversity of product range
  • End user support
  • Future developments
  • Enthusiasm
  • Future

Windows is in its last phase of development. If Microsoft wants to develop its operating system further, it should be open sourced. We see Open Source as an inevitable development phase that all close sourced products reach. Windows grew because of the support that it received from hardware and software vendors. We are now seeing that these vendors are no longer willing to be restrained by Microsoft license fees and regulations.

The approach of Lycoris and the Linux community is better: “Just send it to us and we will see if we can make it work.” Further, you are free to adopt or redistribute Linux.

In Asian countries, Linux is already quite popular, and is growing even more so, especially in the embedded field.

What Lycoris software do you stock?

  • Desktop LX
  • ProductivityPak
  • GamePak
  • Desktop/LX OEM Edition

We are also planning to stock some other Lycoris products, including Desktop/LX Pocket PC Edition, and future Lycoris releases.

How do you see Lycoris software integrating with your company's goals?

Both Circletec and Lycoris are committed to offering quality products with a high “what you see is what you get” factor.

What plans do you have for furthering your relationship with Lycoris?

We are planning to carry and promote all Lycoris products in the future, although this depends on how the co-operation between our companies proceeds. Lycoris has strong American company culture, while on the other hand we are a company with a strong European culture. If we can successfully mix both, we will have a strong position in the market - a mix of Dutch efficiency and American power!

We are planning to offer a total solution base to our clients. To sit next to their desktop or laptop computers, we will offer our clients products like PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras, web cams, printers, scanners, USB drives, software such as the ProductivityPak, and lots of other peripherals. We plan to ensure that all of these peripherals will work under Desktop/LX and we hope that Lycoris will support this goal.

In addition, we have some embedded plans, about which I can say very little right now. We think that Lycoris has great potential and might well become as popular as Windows, as long as they keep focused on the small issues that end users face. Our slogan for Lycoris would not be “think different” but “think small and act big!”

We believe that have we found in Lycoris the ideal partner to move into the Open Source world.
